Departed Soma on the tide’s mercy and made port in Bronzewood 3 sunrises later. My studies there steered into the forbidden, to some fruit. Nearly caught. Wisdom dictates a cautious return.
Upon reaching the Life, the new shipmates joined Heb, Krites, and myself in the quest for fresh water. Their mettle yet untested, it was a sticky situation, as the accursed kobolds assaulted us with glue. It did, however, give me time to consider my new crew mates.
Blazius the Enkindler so-called
By Asher’s beard this one’s flames threaten to burn it all down. Remembrances of youth, delivering potions and powders with Father—like so many of his lot, his focus is on the magic, and he’s likely given no thought to the greater good. Some of those poor souls gave heed to Sarcus’s call and helped Bring in the Dawn. Others kept fiddling with their magic as the world burned around them. Perhaps he’ll surprise me. I’m not too old yet to hope.
Iniptia of Minos
Strong lad, his musculature is unparalleled. He’s a decent enough head on his shoulders and knows more about ships than I’ve ever wanted to know. I admire him greatly for that. Must keep this one safe so he can return to the shipyards. His valor not yet tested in combat, but his spirit in the labor of our voyage speaks volumes.
Fjola Ironjaw
Her presence aboard stirs unease—a dwarf, far from stone and anvil, treading where dwarves sink. A self-proclaimed “witch,” who claims to “float” and lineage to Frizzn hint at the same madness that gripped her kin. I’m certainly no one to judge the bonds of youth (S.A.). Wherever she stood back then, now she stands on the deck of our ship.
Rending Redtooth
I’ve already grown fond of this Magoglin. As Paragon Corviano wrote, he’s a fine display of certain virtues—brave, honest, loyal, and wields power in battle as a scholar wields his quill or a healer his poultice. As I did in the wars, I’ll gladly bleed next to any humanoid who stands with us in the breach.
Nudd Binnion
Seems a fine lad, eagle eyed and a good shot with the bow. His potential for mastering the new crossbows could be a boon for us, which would greatly aid our ship. The captain's decision to entrust me with those machines remains a peculiar twist. An odd bit of fate, indeed, as my sight is not what it once was.

From the Journal of Blazius:
We’ve docked in Soma for the past little while, getting a retrofit and taking on a cargo of wine. There were four very small cracks in the giant amphorae we took on, but I was able to Mend them using magic to help protect our investments. It seems to be my best way of showing my usefulness to the crew and to contribute. I’ve been on this ship for a couple of months and I am really hoping to get a payout soon so I can continue the research I began under my former master in Urnum. Yes, that research resulted in my burning down his lab and being effectively banished from that fine city, but I am pretty sure I can figure out what went wrong once I can FUND further experiments.
At least I had a few opportunities to do some observations recently. First, when we stopped at Bronzewood I found various pieces of driftwood along the beach and spent the day seeing how different types of this lumber burned and how the salt and other contaminants affected the flames. A few pieces gave off a nice bluish tint as they burned, which I’ve taken notes in my lab journal. During my observations, the hobgoblin crew member Rending mentioned something about a whale he wants to kill and he also seemed curious how it would burn. I found this idea highly intriguing and its nice to know I’m not the only person fascinated by the flames.
The next day, we continued our travels along the coast of the Kobold Prairie. The captain called for volunteers to go get water. I’d been eyeing the strange grass of the prairie and its kobolds often as we sailed past, and I immediately volunteered so I could continue my observations of flame. Myself, and 7 others, took a skiff to the shore to gather two fill two large barrels and get back. While the others worried about that, I was able to incinerate a pair of kobolds using Burning Hands. It was fascinating. As they burned, there were elements of green and sometimes purple in the flames. Kobolds have very strange compositions, which could account for this. Unfortunately, I couldn’t study it in the detail I would have liked as a pair of kobolds insisted on trying to kill me while I was trying to make observations. I tried to get a sample of this plain's grass but was unsuccessful in ripping it from the ground. I need to get something sharp to carry around. On the bright side, the kobolds were using the grass as some sort of sticky weapon and large clods stuck to my shield. This ruined the designs I had etched into it, but I don’t mind doing it again. It was an almost meditative exercise when I did it before.
So, while I didn’t learn as much as I would have liked between the kobolds insisting on getting in my way and Fjola dragging me back to the skiff, I count this as a successful endeavor.
